Data and Strategy Part 2:
Planning a project

Project planning - the most glamorous of subjects. But everything from selecting a project to building your team is instrumental in its success.
In this unit: How to choose your battles, set objectives, and gather the data and people you will need.

Selecting the right project

Choosing the right kind of project is your starting point. This will depend on your data, culture, and the kind of organisation you're in. Fortunately, we can help narrow that down for you.

Assembling a project team

Having the right people on board is a crucial step. This is both an internal and external exercise - who has done this kind of thing before who you can take tips from, and who in your organisation will need to have input as you're going along?

Setting SMART objectives

SMART objectives will allow you to document your progress against hard, fast goals; crucial when reporting to the board. Also: we promise this is the only time we let Pete tell you to JFGI.

Getting the data you need

Anyone who works with sensitive data knows how tricky this step can be. But there are strategic considerations to be navigated here, too. The provenance of your sources and the way in which you will make your final report have to be considered.

Select frameworks, agree a plan

We're just putting the finishing touches on now, right? Well, sort of. Having a framework through which you will report - TSMs are an obvious one for housing - will allow you to tailor your plan to your project, and laying out a planning methodology will ease its delivery.

What did you think?

What's next?

The next unit is Data standards; why setting benchmarks for your data-related activities is so important, and how it can be achieved.
